A longstanding program of the United Nations, UN-Habitat endeavors to secure adequate shelter for vulnerable populations worldwide with a concerted focus on social and environmental sustainability. One of the organization’s latest initiatives is securing sustainable housing for workers in the Nuwara Eliya plantation district of Sri Lanka. Conducted with funding from the government of India, the UN-Habitat Sri Lankan project aims to construct 1,600 permanent housing units in an effort to dramatically improve living conditions for Nuwara Eliya plantation workers and their families. To date, 400 workers and family members have moved into residences that include two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a veranda.
