The New York State Bar Association has been at the forefront of maintaining the standards of the legal profession across New York state. NYSBA signed an agreement with the Virgin Islands Bar Association to set up a framework to guide collaboration, including joint events between the two associations. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is NYSBA’s 12th agreement to sign with other bar associations. The MOU was signed at the same time as the launch of a task force whose role is to analyze legal rulings that outline how the federal government should be related to U.S. territories. According to Sherry Levin Wallach, the president of NYSBA, signing the agreement will make it possible for territories’ citizens to advocate for their rights as United States citizens. The signing of the MOU culminated in a week-long NYSBA’s International Section, whose events included the NYC Summer Conference. According to Professor Azish E. Filabi, chair of the NYSBA International Section, the International Section aims to boost partnerships with lawyers worldwide who’re passionate about maintaining the rule of law. The Virgin Islands Bar Association, established in 1956, helps Virgin Islands Supreme Court regulate legal practices in the Islands. All Supreme Court of the Virgin Islands practicing attorneys is also Virgin Islands Bar Association members.
