Since its inception, Bluegrass music has grown into a genre enjoyed worldwide. Bluegrass is a genre from the American South that began in rural areas, starting after World War II. Its name derives from Bill Monroe's band The Blue Grass Boys. The Blue Grass Boys were active during the 1930s, and their band's composition and topics of interest shaped the acts to follow. Bluegrass acts usually consist of five instruments, the fiddle, mandolin, bass, five-string banjo, and flat-top guitar. The instruments take turns playing the melody, and singers mimic Bill Monroe's high-pitched singing style. Band members playing any instrument, at any experience level, may play solos. Bluegrass songs are both secular and religious. Over the course of its decades-long history, Bluegrass music has gathered an audience from across the world, from diverse backgrounds. The International Bluegrass Music Association has members across the entire United States and throughout more than 30 countries.
